2026 Vietnam- Cambodia Mission Team-Update #1

Dear ALWM mission team prayer partners,

Lydia Carlson, Bella Haveman, Hunter Reede, TJ Wojahn, Pastor Carol Fryer, and Karen Dorfmeyer all arrived safely in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam late Tuesday June 9 joining Pastor Bill and Sally for a busy few weeks of ministry in SE Asia! All the supplies we need for the medical / evangelism outreach this weekend and the English Bible Camp next week in Cambodia made it as well. Thanks be to God!! We unpacked some of the supplies this afternoon, with two huge suitcases already in Cambodia with Pastor Sam.

Everyone is doing well with a decent night’s sleep, and we met for our first in person team meeting first thing Wednesday! We gathered at a nearby office building after a nice walk. Keeping active is the best way to press on through jet lag from the 11-12 hour time difference!

We spent time getting acquainted, since it was our first time all together, actively planning for the next week of ministry in Vietnam. Our ALWM Vietnam ( also ministering here as Vital Links) project manager David (Duc) Tran shared his insights and told us about his other local ministry teaching English.

Another highlight today was having Pastor Sam Chim from Cambodia join us in Ho Chi Minh City! He met us for fellowship, to share with the team, andto pick up all of our supplies for the English Bible Camp June 18-21. This year, due to the unrest at the Thailand Border, we will be holding the English Bible Camp at one of the ALWM Cambodia Churches, New Life Church in Takeo.

We had lunch at a local Pho restaurant, and had our first “crosswalks and motorbikes” 101 “crash course - how to walk across the crowded streets full of motorbikes:). It’s always safe, and an adrenaline rush, too!

Wednesday evening we met for a wonderful evening of dinner and fellowship with 4 students in our E-Learning Friendship English Conversation Ministry (EFEC). Nurses and other medical professionals here in Vietnam are paired with a “teacher” from the US. They meet together regularly via zoom / video for English conversation and often a true cross cultural friendship develops! It’s EFEC’s sixth anniversary, so we recognized students who could attend.

Thursday we will visit Dr Hang Nguyen, visionary leader of the Medical / Evangelism outreach ministry that is the core of ALWM’s ministry herea, held in partnership with local congregations in rural areas far removed from the major cities. Every Pastor I have spoken with since 2018 calls these events their most effective outreach to unbelievers. We’ll also take a city tour and prep for our weekend of ministry in Dalat, about 7-8 hours north of Ho Chi Minh City!
